The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom

Alfred Barnard

Alfred Barnard (1837-1918) was a journalist who, between 1885 and 1887, visited every distillery in the United Kingdom, 162 in total of which 129 were in Scotland. The idea of this tour was to provide an article for each distillery in the Harper's Weekly Gazette and in his subsequent book, The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom, that was first published in 1887. Following the publication of this book, Barnard was commissioned by various distilling companies to produce promotional pamphlets, one of which was How to Blend Scotch Whisky for Mackie & Co.

Other publications include The Noted Breweries of Great Britain and Ireland. This was published in three volume following a tour of 110 breweries between 1889 and 1891. A fourth volume was added later. In total, Barnard visited 12 breweries in Scotland.
